Clear Indicators and Side Repeaters :: Subaru Impreza RB5 Owners Club
Not content with spoiling the look of the Impreza, Subaru in their wisdom decided to paint the air vents at the bottom of the front bumper a nice orange colour (possibly to reflect the colour of the front indicators just above).
So, I decided to colour code them after seeing a how-to on the Scoobymods website.
- First I carefully prized the vents off the car using a flat-blade screwdriver covered in a thin cloth. There are two slots at the top of each vent; simply insert the screwdriver blade and push upwards and they should just pop out.
- I then gave them a good wash to get rid of the bug splats.
- I used some very fine wet/dry paper to give them a good sanding.
- Next I got some colour-coded paint from Halfords made-up. They use Holts codes and as luck would have it 86F (steel blue metallic) is listed in their book. It was £8.99 for the smallest sized can.
- I then gave the wedges about 5 light coats and allowed 30 minutes of drying between individual coats. Each coat only took seconds to do, so although you have to leave them to dry for a while, it's only taking about 15 minutes of your time. It's a bit tricky getting the spray in the vents, so I had to be extra careful not to put too much paint on with each coat.
- Some people have then given them a few coats of clear lacquer, but I never bothered.

Update 21-01-2004: Whilst repainting my PIAA driving lamps, I decided to re-paint the wedges to a black finish. I followed the instructions above, first sanding the paint from the wedges. The I sprayed some primer, followed by several coats of gloss Black spray paint and then lastly a couple of coats of clear lacquer. I bought all the spray paint, primer and lacquer from Halfords.
